Healing Goddess Guru: Dr. Char + Charms Of Care

2:39 PM

I had the absolute pleasure of interviewing the amazing Charminae "Dr. Char" Barnes in a new series I am called: Healing Goddess Guru

Hi! How are you?

Well hello there. I am doing very well. Yay!

Tell us a little about yourself.

Honestly I am just a little lady with a HUGE personality who happens to own a dope business called Charms of Care Chiropractic.  It is there that I own the title of being a prenatal & pediatric chiropractor and birth doula. Man, I love what I do.  [Insert BIG smile]

What's your sign!?

I am a true Gemini, minus the crazy part. LOL.

How long have you been a chiropractor?

I have been a chiropractor for 6 years now as of December 14th.

You help adjust new born babes + mamas and you're also a birth doula! How rewarding is that? What is your most memorable experience?

Adjusting babies and pregnant mamas is the most amazing thing that I have ever done with my life (I think). I absolutely love being apart of a woman’s journey to meeting her little one(s). It’s so exciting to see her transform even further into this fierce, strong, sacrificing and fearless person just for the growth and birth of her baby.

Yes, I am a birth doula. I got started in October of 2014 after not feeling completely fulfilled as a prenatal chiropractor in my practice. I wanted to have more of an involvement in the birth process because birth is more spiritual and mental than anything, but I was only serving my clients on the physical aspect so, I became a doula to give more of what my clients needed.

My most memorable experience thus far has to be when I coached one of my moms through her birth back in November. I had been with her over 26 hours and when the moment came that she naturally birthed her beautiful baby boy into this world was absolutely priceless for me as doula and chiropractor. That moment is permanently stamped in my memory because as this was happening, I was in the hospital bed with her holding her hand and talking to her in her ear so that she could pay attention to my voice and no one else’s because our relationship was based on love and trust. I needed her to do that because she had had a dream a few nights prior that she would deliver her baby naturally on November 9th and we only had 12 minutes remaining before the day was over. I knew that if she didn’t get her baby out soon, her doctor would stop the process and began the cesarean procedures, so I didn’t want her to panic. She deserved to have her baby naturally regardless of the fatigue, regardless of the pain, and regardless of the hospital staff talking all around her. And to my utter amazement, at 11:56 pm on November 9th, she met her little boy after holding my hand and hearing my voice. When it was time for me to leave, she looked me in my eyes and said “THANK YOU! You know I couldn’t have done this without you.” For me, this meant that as a woman we have the power to empower one another beyond measure. Yes, I can tell a woman that she can do it, but when that moment comes and she actually does it… MAN, now that is what I call POWERFUL.

What is the most important way to stay aligned and balance within a field that requires so much energy exchange as yours?

The most important way that I stay aligned and balance is self-care that is a direct result of incredible self-love. I literally put myself first in every aspect of my life because if my cup is half full then my clients don’t receive my best. They deserve my highest care and that is what they will get because it’s important. The specifics of my self-care is meditating, reading, working out, praying, daily visualizations of what I want for my life, blasting music and rocking out in my loft and car, fueling my body with the things that it needs, getting regular chiropractic adjustments, rocking my unique style everyday, and surrounding myself with people I adore and vice versa. I try to do as many of these things daily. It keeps me sane, literally. LOL!

You're a vegan-pescatarian! I am too! What is your favorite thing to eat right now?

Yes, I am a pesco-vegan (mainly vegan though) and this is a tough one… I have been obsessed lately with juicing. My favorite is this juice from Whole Foods called: “Park Lane”. It consists of carrots, lemons, ginger and apples. It’s sooo freakin' good and no other place makes it the same as they do. Ugh! Also, I have been lovin' this quinoa stir-fry from LYFE Kitchen. LYFE stands for (Loving Your Food Everyday)! Isn’t that dope??? LOL. It consists of beef-less tips served over quinoa, black rice and cilantro with sweet chile-ginger sauce with carrots, snap peas, yellow peppers and broccoli. Seriously, if you have one in your area, please do yourself a favor and check it out. You won’t be disappointed. I promise.

Lastly, I LOVE avocado toast! Just take an avocado and add some lemon, lime, sea salt and pepper to it and spread it on a few slices of toasted Ezekiel bread and you are good to go. It’s THE BEST morning or afternoon snack EVER!

One of my praxis is to "always be healing". What is one thing that you would always suggest that we as women always do to make sure we are constantly healing?

I would have to suggest the same thing I said about keeping myself aligned and balanced… SELF-CARE! It is such a necessity, but it varies from woman to woman. For me it’s all the things that I previously listed, but for another woman, it could be going to get a mani/pedi, watching documentaries, playing sports, going to the movies by herself, eating raw foods, getting a massage etc. Doing the things that takes care of you, helps you to become more protective of your mind, body, and spirit. Healing takes place when you come first. It is a simple as that.

Also, tapping into your feminine traits such as: openness, nurturing and intuition helps a woman to stay connected to herself (her womb) even more. This helps you to heal by staying balanced.

How do you get in-touch with and/or release your inner Goddess?

This is funny to me because I feel like I get in touch with my inner Goddess when I dance sexy in front of the mirror (like the Beyonce video “Dance for You”). LOL. Now, I’m no dancer, but I love moving my body and noticing my curves in the process. It’s so beautiful to me and it helps me to embrace my femininity further. The softness of our skin, the stretch of our smiles, the lightness of our touch is so powerful, man. The dancing helps me to realize that even more. Corny, huh? Also, some mornings when I’m not feeling my best, I like to stand in front of the mirror naked and stripped and remind myself of who I am and what God has created me to be. I take that moment to cancel out the negative thoughts, the nay-sayers, (etc.) and I remind myself of what MY truth is. No one defines me but me and sometimes I forget that even after all of the growth.

What does wellness mean to you?

Good question. Wellness to me means LOVE. Loving myself enough to give myself what I need at all times and this is much more than food or water. It’s focusing on the WHOLEness of me because you can’t separate the mind from the body or the body from the spirit. It’s works together as ONE, which is so AWESOME!

What are you reading right now?

I am reading “The Power of Habit” by Charles Duhigg! It’s amazeballs.

Three words that describe your journey thus far on this earth.

Beautiful, Unexpected and Strength
